My BLOG POST
Why Travel Blogging?
Hello, you’re welcome to my first blog… My name is Mary– a travel nurse who is passionate about travelling and exploring different cultures.
After months of strong feelings of self-doubt, I’m so happy you’re finally reading my first blog post.
I’ve been meaning to start this for a while now, but I just couldn’t see myself turning my experience into words on paper.
Several times, I have battled with writer’s block. I would sit down staring at a blank sheet.
But you know this general saying, “most things worth doing begin with just showing up”.
I just had to do it. I had to share my thoughts and experiences–not for me but for people like you who need encouragement, courage, and guidance on how to navigate their travel journey safely and easily with no hitches. And I hope it’s really helpful.
Obviously, you are seeing my post for the first time, which means you may not know who I am.
Who am I?
I am a girl who grew up in Toronto. I was 17 years old when my family moved to Canada from Nigeria to have a fresh start.
The sound of the news sounded so amazing that I jumped with so much joy, not knowing the kind of life waiting for me on the other side.
This bold decision of my family had a great impact on me.
A lot of things I didn’t expect or prepare for happened, and I didn’t have a choice but to adjust.
You know that experience where you find yourself in the midst of people with a different culture, mindset, and system, and you don’t have a choice but to adjust to their way of life. Exactly my experience
Imagine having to force me to start secondary school afresh when I almost got a degree in Nigeria (LOL). It’s just too funny. But not anymore, I’m used to the world now, and I know how the system works.
Even though it took a while to find my feet in the Canadian system (and yes, you really do have to put your best foot forward during this process!). Now, I have legs both in.
Anyways, I am currently working as a nurse, a travel nurse to be precise. Nursing has always been close to my heart—it’s something I genuinely care about, as it gives me a sense of purpose.
However, as my life became more stable, I began to recognize that I had more desires.
I wasn’t just craving rest—I was craving something different. I wanted to feel inspired again. That’s when I turned travelling into a hobby.
You see, for a long time, travel felt like something people did with enough money, time, and freedom. I didn’t grow up thinking of airports, passports, or foreign cities as part of my world. But somewhere along the way, that changed when I travelled to Jamaica.
At first, it wasn’t some big moment-it was a slow realization.
I felt a tiny spark of curiosity when I saw someone’s vacation photos, heard stories about places I’d never been, and wondered what it would feel like to be there.
I’d see photos of distant places and feel a pull I couldn’t explain. I’d hear someone talk about a trip, and instead of brushing it off, I’d find myself imagining what it would be like to go.
Curiosity started creeping in. What do people eat in Morocco? What does the ocean sound like in Thailand? What’s it like to wake up somewhere completely unfamiliar?
Now, I can’t be more interested in other things other than travelling, engaging in fitness activities (I learned to swim at 29 years old and am still improving), and, of course, caring for others and bringing them happiness.
My passion for Travel
Today, my interests have grown far beyond nursing.
I love to travel. I enjoy staying active—I even learned to swim at 29 (still improving, by the way!)- and no matter what I do, caring for others and spreading joy will always be at the heart of it all.
This blog is the beginning of something fresh for me. A space to reflect, to share, and to hopefully help you feel seen, inspired, and a little more adventurous.
So, whether you’re a fellow nurse looking for your next travel assignment, someone craving a life outside your comfort zone, or just curious about what’s out there—I’m glad you’re here.
Let’s take this journey together.
My goal is simple
I want to show busy professionals like me, especially other nurses, and especially people of colour, that you can explore the world without quitting your job or being rich. You do not have to choose between a career and adventure. You can build both.
Through my travels, I want to break stereotypes and rewrite the narrative. We have the right to rest. Even if we come from backgrounds where those things felt out of reach, we can experience beauty, luxury, and freedom.
I want people to know that weekend getaways, affordable flights, and intentional travel planning are all valid ways to see the world.
This blog isn’t just about me going places; it is about showing you that you can go too.
Let’s normalize full-time workers with passports. Let’s normalize people of colour in luxury destinations. Let us normalize living fully, even with a busy schedule.
Let’s build a community of bold, curious, busy people choosing to explore anyway.
